50 years ago today, the new riders of the purple sage with most of the #gratefuldead at #nyc’s felt forum, the theater adjacent to madison square garden. broadcast on WNEW, it was well-bootlegged. the tape begins with rock scully hanging out with the DJs... https://archive.org/details/nrps1973-03-18.fm.weiner.21538.sbeok.shnf

#NowPlaying - my copy of the new riders at the felt forum bootleg LP, inherited from one of my father’s animation assistants along with “marquee moon,” “tales of the great rum runners,” “never mind the bollocks...” & more when i was 14 or 15. thanks howie!!! [2/5]
3/18/73 felt forum: haven’t listened to many NRPS [pronounced “nerps”] tapes since garcia’s ’71 departure & l’il surprised at their transformation into full-tilt boogie (made more interesting by buddy cage’s pedal steel) with so much sung by bassist dave torbert. keith godchaux joins for most of the show & fills out sound with instinctual boogie-oogie-oogie, starting with r.b. greaves’s TAKE A LETTER MARIA. #DonnaJean sang on the original, but she doesn’t join until LONG BLACK VEIL. [3/5]
#JerryGarcia plays banjo on HELLO MARY LOU & HENRY, cranked in the mix, though everybody’s pretty well-represented. with banjo & piano, it’s maximum density LSDC&W, industrial strength NRPS. funny & fun to hear HENRY slathered in banjo. sweetest (& most famous) part is trio of acoustic songs to open 2nd set with garcia & #BobWeir harmonizing with nelson/dawson for 1st/last time since late summer ’70 on COLD JORDAN, I HEAR A VOICE A-CALLIN’, & SWING LOW SWEET CHARIOT. [4/5]
ramblin’ jack elliot (then touring with NRPS) joins for a stones tune in each set. marmaduke sez they learned CONNECTION from him (he covered it in ’68). more guests throughout, with donna & weir popping back out a few times, garcia adding 6-string to GLENDALE TRAIN & rave-up WILLIE & THE HAND JIVE finale, on which achieve garcia & cage achieve a pretty buoyant weave. weir sings RACE IS ON for 1st time since 5/70, back in dead’s repertoire tomorrow. #garciafreaksunite #jg031873 [5/5]
