50 years ago tonight, old & in the way open their only tour in boston, their east coast debut & 1st gig with legendary new & ex blue grass boy vassar clements. now with a full LP’s worth of new original material. doug sahm opens. a composite recording of 2 audience tapes. torrent: shnflac.net/index.php?page=tor [1/4]

6/5/73 boston: if richard greene’s fiddle made the band 3D, then vassar clements turns them 4D, incredibly swinging & mournful & right-on. show opens with the debut of the garcia-penned OLD & IN THE WAY BREAKDOWN. also 1st circulating versions of jimmie rodgers’ MULESKINNER BLUES (sung by r. hunter in the wildwood boys, more effectively here by rowan), grisman’s staple instrumental CEDAR HILL, rowan’s THAT HIGH LONESOME SOUND, & jack bonus’s HOBO SONG, later recorded for the album. [2/4]

grisman clearly relishing the band intros, affecting slight southern accent & throwing back to bluegrass shows of yore, introducing each band members by where they’re from. introducing kahn: “this boy is from memphis, tennessee, he was born there, i won’t tell you where he was raised...” (hollywood). ”diggin’ the potatas on the 5-string banjo over here is spud garcia...” rowan gets big local cheers. answer vocals already gone from PANAMA RED. just realized that LAND OF THE NAVAJO is probably a genetic relation to WABASH CANNONBALL. last known versions of HOW MOUNTAIN GIRLS CAN LOVE & TRAGIC ROMANCE. semi-tragically, the only circulating old & in the way version of rowan’s wonderful MISSISSIPPI MOON, from seatrain’s 1971 george martin-produced LP & in garcia’s solo repertoire from ’75-’95. lotta yodeling. [4/4]

@bourgwick Note NJ John Scher presenting the show at The Orpheum, which I had thought was Don Law’s joint. Boston still a kind of Open City for rock promoters in 73

@Corry342 also scher's 1st gig with garcia following the bust/bonding in march.
