50 years ago today, old & in the way make their only east coast festival appearance at the warrenton festival in virginia, with a typically crazy multi-day bill playing directly in front of lake whippoorwill. kind of a weird set, not really playing to their strengths. not jerry moore’s finest tape, either, but thankful he trekked out. torrent: shnflac.net/index.php?page=tor [1/3]

6/8/73 lake whipporwhill: band establish their bill monroe bona fides right away with ROANOKE (or is it TALL TIMBER?) & the 1st version of ON & ON. an odd set, maybe playing to the traditional festival heads, only LAND OF THE NAVAJO among the rowan originals, but not even any of their original shredder instrumentals either, though maybe stuff is missing from the tape. tex logan joins for NO IT AIN’T, a mystery beyond its title, announced by grisman. on the deadcast, peter rowan told us about how it felt like a breakthrough festival in the newgrass revolution, with a jam featuring him, david grisman, john hartford, sam bush, & more in their undershirts, though no garcia. tapes are out there, but can’t find a streaming version. dead.net/deadcast/here-comes-s
