50 years ago tonight, & at the lion’s share in san anselmo, warming up for their live album sessions, plus a mystery trumpet player. released in its entirety as “garcialive, vol. 6”: youtube.com/watch?v=AuEhcg0tDj
@FateMusic details the show & attempts to identify the trumpet player: jgmf.blogspot.com/2011/06/ln-j [1/3]

7/5/73 lion’s share: 1st circulating versions of 3 more songs that will be recorded for live LP later in week: lightnin’ hopkins’s SOMEDAY BABY (in rotation until ’90), saunders & kahn’s FINDERS KEEPERS (knocked off from the meters for those recording royalties?), & rodgers/hart’s MY FUNNY VALENTINE (garcia heading further into the jazz book), the last 2 both big additions. last THE SYSTEM (& only known one where saunders sings). deep SHE’S GOT CHARISMA, long free disassembly. michael (no known last name) joins on trumpet for whole 2nd set. little shaky in places, but vaguely electric miles-ish when band is vibed enough. 26-minute MERL’S TUNE wanders down to nothingness & (as trumpet noodles) clicks back to somethingness, band kicking into groove. tape runs out as band still seems to be jamming, so it might actually be a proper segue into the night-closing HOW SWEET IT IS. @bourgwick At some point years ago @FateMusic and I (and others) went around and around on various suspects for the trumpet player, rejected them all
