- mark lewisohn's "tune in" is just astonishing, really. 800 pages on , ending on new year's 1962-1963, & i'm already frothing for the next 2 yet-unfinished books. "revelatory" is too weak a word. forensic , lost repertoire, scene workings, ancient gear, side quests, impossible heartbreak/fate/joy. i needed a chaser after the 2nd volume of the elvis bio & wow. i guess i've been lad-pilled (again)?

oh no/oh yes: there is apparently also a 1,700+ page edition of mark lewisohn's early bio, & i'm terrified that i now have to read that. wish i'd known earlier, like, before i'd read the 800 page version. musicians.today/@mattyoung/110

@bourgwick So this is mostly "pre-history" up to their signing with George Martin? Can there be that much we don't know about that period? (Obviously yes?)

@dmandl they signed with martin earlier in '62 & lewisohn treats him as a major character, so (for example) his earlier story is entwined a lot. but, yes, it's every conceivable detail about their childhoods, jobs they worked, early lineups, virtually every gig from before the skiffle era through hamburg, how it all fit into social/historical trends, all the meetings epstein took to try to sell them, etc. i never once found it boring.

@bourgwick Thanks. Wow, looks like I might have to buy another Beatles book.

@bourgwick
It's so very good. I've been reading the 2 volume unabridged version for the past year...taking it super slowly, hoping that I'll finish right when the follow up comes out.

@mattyoung wait, there's an even longer version???

@mattyoung oh no/oh yes. wish i'd known! not ready to dive back in but maybe sometime.

@bourgwick

Like I said, I've been bathing in this pool for just over a year and I don't care how wrinkled I get, I'm not ready to get out yet!

@bourgwick I think there might be such a thing as TOO much information. 🥴

@bourgwick this is my music-book version of Martin’s Game of Thrones or Caro’s LBJ where I want to know he’ll actually complete the project before diving in!
