Stoney Takes

“How the West was Lost” starring- Decades of Mismanagement, Corporate Raiders, The Forest Fire Industrial Complex, and sponsored by Global Warming.

Land managers in the west, all the way to Washington DC, engaged in decades long pilfering of resources. Cut and run logging. Herbicides. Genetically modified super trees (epic failure). Destroying watersheds, forests and rivers along the way. Never any funds for forest health. No money to mitigate damage or prevention. Now an open checkbook to dump cash on the inevitable fires. Make it make sense.

@Stoneycase underwritten by greed and short-term thinking

@tuneslist 1000% It always baffled me that congress had no money for forest health and an open check book once a fire started. I want to laugh and cry. This was all foretold to my face by truly hard working and well intentioned people that were routinely ignored by those in power

@Stoneycase @tuneslist yeah smart people have been talking about sustainable forestry and controlled burns in the West for decades (well, centuries, but I mean in USA controlled times) and putting them into practice where possible but they just can't make enough headway to get in front of it. The built up fuel loads are like truckloads of nitroglycerin sitting on every ridgeline

@mrcompletely @tuneslist Weyerhauser and Georgia Pacific should be footing the bill. Best thing that ever happened to big timber, is big oil

@Stoneycase we had an incredible journey moving our daughter into college the past week in Oregon. From Redding into well passed Medford, couldn’t see more than a 1/2 mile to a mile for the most part. Never experienced anything like it. I’ve lived thru and evacuated more than once in SoCal fires, real bad ones. The magnitude of this is near unfathomable.

@phewstepsaway Ugh. Mine just finished at OU and Lane, respectively. It’s like this every year around this time. Try and make sure they get places with AC so they can sleep with windows closed during fire season. This exact scenario was explained to me by simple mountain and river folks 30 years ago. This very exact scenario.

@Stoneycase frosh dorm no AC! Live and learn moving forward, it’s all you can do.
