#jazzfest stop 1: harpist brandee younger's trio, at the opera house, playing a few about-to-be-recorded tunes. my first time seeing her (finally!) after listening endlessly to her duo record with dezron douglas. wondrous floating harp playing & semi ugly drum mix. kinda wish it was less solo formatted, but maybe she does that with other lineups. #jazz #harp
#jazzfest stop 2: bassist #WilliamParker with pianist dave burrell & drummer william booker, pummeling trio dance driven by tidal drumming. a bit packed, though snagged sweet couch seat by the end. #jazz
#jazzfest stop 3: national sawdust for saxophonist (& pianist) #ZohAmba & drummer #ChrisCorsano. perfect foils in duo exchange, tearing apart melodies/rhythms with complete musicality & sense of fun, each occasionally focusing into passages of "traditional" sounding #jazz brilliance before exploding into the zone again.
#jazzfest stop 4: back at the opera house, 98-year-old #MarshallAllen & 16-piece #arkestra play the living music of #SunRa. potent "angels & demons at play" tonight, deep blues sung by tara middleton, & a few solo turns by bassist tyler mitchell. also, in my 25 years seeing the arkestra (!?), i've somehow never seen one of their costumes accidentally turned into a saturnian disco ball. #jazz #nyc
wow. colour me jealous. looks like an amazing experience.
