4/16/83 east rutherford: complete-feeling 1st set. 10-minute BIRD SONG has lots of twining bass that plays off garcia, arriving at great place before final climb, but also GS-1-ified, keyboards disappearing into the muck except at their most piercing. set closes with nice block where 4 of the 5 last songs are new & unrecorded, including weir’s increasingly confident MY BROTHER ESAU, mydland’s blustery MAYBE YOU KNOW, & garcia’s WEST LA FADEAWAY & hyper-speed set-closing TOUCH OF GREY. DEAD ARE ALIVE: There weren't very many surprises Saturday night when The Grateful Dead played the first show of a two- night stand at the Brendan Byrne Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. The show was sold out and “Dead Heads” were everywhere — they were even outside hunting for tickets some 30 1 ' “ minutes after the kol ' show started. Bob ¥ 4 ~ Weir, Jerry Garcia A Ty and company played M all of the old favorites e .. including “Truckin’ ” t B and “Uncle John’s Yy ’ Band.” But the |l A highlight of the show w7 was when Stephen Stills came on stage : and joined the grou Bob Weir on “Aikko” and forg tremendous encore of the Chuck Berry classic, “Johnny B. Goode.”

45-minute UNCLE JOHN’S BAND > TRUCKIN’ > DRUMZ > SPACE > BLACK QUEEN > IKO IKO. weir repeating “what a long strange trip it’s been” over TRUCKIN’ outro. stephen stills blows out for BLACK QUEEN, written for the dead & played once with them in 12/69. uh, high energy. stills takes well-emoted verse in IKO, mostly syllable-salad but a few words in there, too. IKO is way more appealing/ridiculous to me with lesh’s absurdist 6-string. [3/5]

Reviewer: Diabolical Lies - ## - July 17,2009 ‘Subject: Along time ago, in a galaxy far far away. 1 remember this show, siting by the side of the stage and watching everything going on backstage. This starts out with a really nice China Cat> Rider, with the band locking several times. Toward the end of rumz, you couid see the roadies in the dark, pushing an amplifier up next o Jerry’s rig. There s a it bit imissing on this recording from the transition of drumz to Black Queen, cause Stils (on stage alone for the first minutelstarted doing feedback unti the others joined him. Black Queen is raw and crunchy and tran- sitions nicely into Iko. My recollection is that Bobby seemed jealous that Stils was getting most of the at- tention and kept inserting himsel atthe front o the stage (Look over here). He promptly got the spotight with "Litle tar", a fun but short ived rap. The security guard next o us was dancing tool This was a fun evening and | can't believe how young | was back then.

after stills departs, garcia signals band into THE OTHER ONE, weir singing LITTLE STAR on top of the groove. not quite a song, not quite a rap, probably most accurately, 19-minute LITTLE STAR/THE OTHER ONE > THE OTHER ONE > BLACK PETER > ONE MORE SATURDAY MIGHT. doesn’t go far or long, but OTHER ONE conversation feels real for a flash. stills returns midway through BLACK PETER, adding appropriately scuzzed blooze-weave. [4/5]

Hawilo 15 years 9 months ago Wicked Fun show Wicked fun showl think it was called the Brendan Byrne Arena though. After the drums, you could see everyone on stage but the whole arena was dark, and the jam just getting hotter and hotter, and still no ights, everyone was lighting thelr lighters, and the jam was getting hotter and hotter and when the lights came on Jerry was not on stage, it was Stephan Stil playing lead and went in to Black Queen. Truly memorable. The crowd went nuts!

Remerber this as a super hot show. ‘and we danced like fools! Must say that during Black Queen and Iko | was very conused, so just listened tothe music play! Can't believe that 37 years has gone by LIKE THAT, was 5o lucky to have ssen this and 50 many other great shows.

Weir seemed really jealous the first night and kept jumping in front of the stage as ifo say look at me 'm il here. Fist set pretty typical but Jerry real takes off with China cat to open the second. The Steve Stis comes out and we knew it was a special right.Iko was SO much fun. Stll reoins for JBG to cap offa fun show. | figured ths was pretty much as god as it gets so decided not to come back the next right - boy was | wrong - go check out the next ight - realy wild space leading into Love the One You're With - 1 got it on tape but wished I'd have been there for both!

memories of the dead’s brendan byrne debut, 40 years ago tonight, concluded. [5/5]

Steve Stills joined the band for Black Queen, then attempted to sing a verse in Iko Iko but just made up some lyrics and then came back out to join them for Johnny B Goode. We had driven into NYC early in the day to buy tickets from a scalping agency, to find out there were actually 2 shows (pre-internet w/limited info available) so bought tickets for both shows. Stills joined them the second night as well - two excellent shows as far as I am concerned!! -David (02/21/2018)
NedtheFed 10years 10 months ago Favorite Show Ever! 1had the best time this night! Second set Vista-cruiser topped off with a surprise appearance by Stephen Stills. I remember, after the drums (and very short space, seeing a fat guy come out with a guitar, and being very confused that he didr't have a beard. Then he started singing, and it al became clear. And you can't beat Johnny B. Goode in four-part harmony! This show and 4/17 should be put out on CDI
Juniorill 2years 11 months ago Steven Stills and Etta James What a night! Etta James was playing somewhere else in NYC, that same night, and after the Dead show, Steven headed overto the Etta gig. The Etta show was being broadcastlive on TV and by chance we just happened to turn on the TV back at our hotel room and there's Steven playing with Ettal Id never heard of Etta, at that point, and I've been a huge fan ever since. 2yx 11 years 8 months ago Before the yellow jackets Beat the bus by hitching from N.C.- 17 and a half hours and dropped off two blocks from home. Last ride was a lucky one - guy was tuning his radio oin the shoulder of the road. We knocked on the door of the Uhaul and ‘asked if he stopped for us. An answer of, " no, but Il give you a ride" was welcome and after my buddy left to head to his home in Towson, my driver was willing to take the bridge instead of the tunnel and there | was. My best time ever. Oh yeah, show was rockin. Looking down thinking,“s that Hunter?” and then listening. Wit it’s Stephen stils. Cool! Kjmedonagh 13years 1 month ago Notes?
