I'm in the market for a new pair of mallets, and while trying to narrow down my options I found this review for the Promark MT3 model. While it doesn't apply to my particular situation, I imagine it could be useful to some folks out there.

Screenshot of an Amazon review for timpani mallets which reads: These are the most comfortable sticks my toddler has ever smacked me across the shins with, so if you also own a toddler then you need these to replace the straight hard wood ones that came with that xylophone that you thought he would play. They border on massage rather than searing pain. They also make a pretty great sound on that xylophone, but that feature is only second to comfort.
